It’s All a Game

Only once did the thought of banning toy guns from my house ever really cross my mind.  I dismissed it promptly.  I know my husband and knew he would have fallen out of his chair laughing and writhing from hysterics over that sentiment. Compromise works, there are guns and dolls.

I have held firm to the never point guns at people (or the dogs) rule.

It wouldn’t have mattered if they were banned or not.  My four year old constructs guns out of other toys and my two year old is walking around “shooting baddies” with a measuring cup.

I tried the whole…”don’t shoot guns at people” and was very firm about it. They then turned in to deer, turkeys, ducks, rogues, shammans and driuds just to name a few. We have also gotten the nerf guns that shoot out foam balls and darts and well those are just fun to have a war with. The kids did not think it was fair that just mom and dad got to shoot each other with it;)

Yeah we are in the same boat over here. My boys have tons of guns just like their daddy, grandpa and papa. We all have nerf guns and the whole family runs around “shooting” each other some times. In the summer we do the same with water guns.

I think teaching respect and responsibility of guns is more important than trying to pretend like they don’t exist.

Mine don’t own any guns save maybe a squirter or two but will make them out of legos, or even have gone so far to chew a handle on a tortilla or slice of bologna and aim them at eachother! Must be something about boys. Erik wanted to get them a BB gun for Christmas, I admit I drew the line at that one.

We contemplated banning guns until my husband read an excellent article (I’m going to try and find it) that discussed how innate it is in boys to be “hunter gatherers” and to protect. The same way it is innate for the girls to want to pick up a baby doll and cuddle it. We actually haven’t “purchased” any play guns (other than water guns) and like your boys, our son makes everything into a gun or a sword!

It is a boy thing. You know how mine are – ray guns and light sabers galore!
