A Venting of Sorts

We all get a little crotchety, right? A year in the blogworld is 7 years in real life, right? This makes me old and gives me the ability to randomly vent.

There are a few things that immediately turn me off of any website:

  1. Bug-eyed cartoon women – I find them infantalyzing and as I often have a hard enough time being taken seriously. It may be irrational, so be it. Don’t worry if this works for you, there are plenty of people out there who find the drawings cute and endearing. You can’t please everyone.
  2. Auto-play music or video. ‘Nuff Said.
  3. Sparkles, unless they are ironic sparkles.
  4. Content comprised solely of useless memes that require one word answers or no effort.
Participation in memes doesn’t bother me, it just annoys me when there is never any original content. (For the record I love memes where people show off projects, so I’m biased in that regard).
  5. People who take themselves too seriously.
Yes, yes, I’m a hypocrite. Noted.
  6. Blogs that only exist to talk about rebating and couponing. This one is another it’s not you, it’s me.
  7. Slow page loads (I can say that now that I fixed my own. Thanks Jared.

Now #getoffmylawn unless you have a few peeves of your own.

Also, thank you  Malia for the inspiration, not for being guilty of the offenses.

Had a friend complain about my avatar the other day “But you don’t have bug eyes with long, flirty lashes.” Oh well. If I can ever find a cartoon that really looks like me or someone who can draw one for not too much, I’ll go for it. 🙂

One of my peeves is repetition in a niche. Home-Ec 101 works because it’s like one giant how-to manual for homes and such and while there’s competition, there aren’t a ton of people writing such serious & dedicated blogs about it. Different people’s take on a bit of news (like the oil spill or Wonder Woman’s new outfit) is fine, but everyone writing how to write a perfect budget or the top ten ways to cut back on tv spending…it gets so old to read & makes me sick to write.

There is a difference between infantalyzed and cute and I don’t think I’m articulate enough to accurately explain it. But, I can certainly tell you when particular cartoon bugs me. I just don’t want to go so far as to call people out on it and no, your avatar was not the version I had pictured.
I know exactly what you mean regarding niche repetition. Originality is hard and I know I am probably guilty of it in some regards. I try hard to stay on this side of that line, though. There is nothing new under the sun, but we don’t have to carbon copy it, either.

Can I add, “no stumbleupon or retweet buttons”???

😛

I wanted to stumble this, but you’re making it difficult. 😉

This is my journal / scrapbook. I don’t really want it to have any chance of going viral, so it will stay neglected. My purpose isn’t to try to entice others. I don’t mind if others stop by, but I’m not working actively to bring them in.
